And that’s a wrap!  

What an exciting few weeks of back-to-back conferences full of in person meetings, new connections, exhibit halls, and learning opportunities. We’re back home and energized to get moving on a lot of really interesting new projects that are pushing the edge of automation technology. Here are a few write-ups from our traveling team:  

Blue Mantis CloudScape 

CampTek attended the two-day CloudScape 2023 event by Blue Mantis in Newport, RI. CTO and Founder, Peter Camp and Director of Customer Operations, Gretchen Hyslip, were in attendance to hear from industry professionals around topics such as cyber security, data migration, and automation. What we took away far exceeded our expectations and we look forward to next year's conference!

Becker's Health IT + Digital Health + RCM Meeting

This is one of the key conferences for healthcare, with focus on RCM and new tech that can help providers achieve their goals of improving patient care while also adopting business efficiencies to improve A/R days and ease current need for outdated manual employee manual process execution. Takeaways: Although we did not have a great location, we were able to secure a few quality leads from meetings and 1 prospect. Analysis: I was encouraged by the fact that from the few conversations that we did have, the market is aware of RPA and its value and also our Managed Service Offering resonates further.

HLTH

The Conference Regatta continues! With a large group of the team deployed to Las Vegas, Camptek has been busy bouncing between industry events. The first stop for Peter Camp (CTO & Founder), Bob Discuillo (VP of Sales), and Tristan Tucker (Account Executive), was HLTH at the Las Vegas Convention Center!

With no shortage of things to participate in, HLTH delivered on providing a great ecosystem for Healthcare professionals and their support networks to discuss top of mind issues and create real value discussions. Whether it was lectures on Big Techs growing presence in the space, or breakout sessions between partners and providers evaluating the impact AI will have on infrastructure and the space at large, every day was a new opportunity to broaden our horizons and keep a finger on the pulse for what really moves the needle in healthcare!

What I Wish I Knew About RPA: A Letter from a Former Revenue Cycle Specialist 

I worked in revenue cycle for nearly ten years, and I never once heard the term “RPA,” nor did I even know what that was. When I started at CampTek and began reading numerous articles and case studies, I wondered why I had never heard that term before. Revenue cycle and RPA should go hand in hand because I know firsthand that revenue cycle burnout is real. 

I know there can be many reasons why the healthcare system is apprehensive about RPA, and a major one I have heard a lot is “it has worked for years.” It has, but the revenue cycle is ever-changing, and it is imperative to make changes to adapt to that. I recently read an article from Becker’s Hospital Review about the top 10 processes providers said are getting most regularly backlogged, many of which were part of my old job and could benefit from RPA. These processes are time-consuming tasks that one could argue have been working for years. But they have always been time-consuming tasks that anyone in revenue cycle would appreciate assistance with. 

As mentioned above, the revenue cycle is ever-changing, and with that comes software changes. As someone who was a part of a billing and medical software change, I know how difficult that can be. There were days when we all wanted to throw the towel in, so hearing about implementing RPA can bring back some bad memories. Implementing RPA is not the same thing; it is something that will only help, and it is not something that should disrupt your workflow. 

The revenue cycle is just that; it is a cycle. When you think you finally have time to get to some of these backlogged items, the cycle begins again, and it is time to shift your focus elsewhere. Those backlogged items have been problematic for years. The first thought many have is to hire more people to do that job, which is unrealistic due to finances, burnout, or simply finding staff. RPA should be the first thought that comes to mind; it is realistic, safe, and a cost-effective solution. 

Dealing with insurance companies is frustrating, from remembering what insurance company requires on their claims to which website you need to use to even knowing which phone number to call, and this is just one aspect of the entire cycle. It can be frustrating, exhausting, and time-consuming, which ultimately could lead to burnout. The tools are at our fingertips to help, if not prevent this from happening. Now is the time to open the door to RPA, tackle those never-ending backlogs, and to focus on more valuable tasks. The revenue cycle burnout is real, but that needs to change, and RPA is a great place to start.

Real RPA Case Studies, Real Verifiable Solutions

Industry: Healthcare, available for any industry

Applications: Epic

Challenge: A large Mid-West Healthcare provider with fifteen hospitals across two states had a large document processing problem: importing Patient Consent Forms into OnBase. This is generally not an issue for most DU (Document Understanding) tools because most of the data is structured. In this case these particular documents included a stamp or label of patient demographics added by hand and placed on the document with both structured and unstructured data. This information on these labels then needed to be read and indexed into Epic. The challenge was that these labels were being placed on the documents by clinicians and in most cases were not always positioned in a way that was effectively “read” by most DU tools.

Solution:  As a trusted adviser to the client, CampTek Software brought in several DU vendors to perform a proof of concept for the provider so they could evaluate the ability of several tools to effectively read the skewed labels. Document Understanding solutions such as ABBYY, UiPath and Indico were among those reviewed.

Each product was given a sample set of documents as part of a proof of concept. From there, CampTek would analyze the ability and percentage results to present back to the client. The findings were overwhelmingly positive for Indico. Even upside down, the labels could be read immediately. For others, the test proved that if the label was more than 10% out of alignment, they had poor results. Indico immediately showed a 90% accuracy result. Indico also did not require the use of templates, like some of the other tools did.

 

The findings were presented to the customer and within a short time the project was approved. Also, it was stated by the project lead that once this first project was implemented, there will be additional opportunities for expansion of the Indico/CampTek managed services solution. For example, the ability to pull data and documents from Legacy systems like CPSI and replacing expensive point solutions like Edco Solarity as next projects.
